THURLES’ Community Hospital of the Assumption has received a glowing report card from the Health and Information Quality Authority (HIQA), with the person in charge, Mairead Greene, being singled out for her professionalism.

HIQA carried out an inspection of the Community Hospital on January 29th this year. The facility has 25 beds (22 beds temporarily closed). Maria Bridgeman is authorised to act on behalf of the provider, the HSE. There were 47 residents. The person in charge, Mairead Greene, is a registered nurse and works full time in the centre. “She had the required experience in the area of nursing older people,” notes the Inspector. “(She) had maintained her continuous professional development. She had additional qualifications in management, clinical leadership and using a legal framework. She was currently undertaking a module in infection control and was part of a palliative care steering group. She also undertook other clinical training courses such as wound management and the management of swallowing disorders. The person in charge’s knowledge of the Regulations and the National Quality Standards for Residential Care Settings for Older People in Ireland and her statutory responsibilities was sufficiently demonstrated during the inspection.”
