North Tipperary Vocational Education Committee discussed Student Maintenance Grants at its meeting on Monday 10th October, 2011.
Members highlighted their concerns regarding the changes in the Student Maintenance Grants scheme in 2011 and the negative effect these changes are having on existing students, in particular the changes relating to payment of the adjacent and non-adjacent rates.
While North Tipperary Vocational Education Committee do not have any discretion in this matter they are aware of the financial difficulties that these changes have caused for students.
North Tipperary Vocational Education Committee passed a motion requesting the CEO to correspond with the Minister for Education and Skills highlighting their concerns and requesting Minister Quinn to review this section of the 2011 Student Maintenance Grants Scheme.
The CEO advised members to inform students that they should contact the Access Officer in their relevant colleges to apply for assistance through the ‘Student Assist Fund’, the closing date for such applications is the 28th October, 2011.
The Committee also wish to advise the public that there is a backlog in the processing of grant applications and to facilitate the processing of these applications the NTVEC student maintenance grants section will be closed to the public from Monday 17th October, 2011 through to Friday 4th November 2011.
