Congratulations to our second class who made their First Holy Communion last weekend. It was the culmination of many months of preparation on their behalf and on that of their teacher Miss Bennett. They were a credit to themselves, their school and their families on the day and we hope they enjoyed every minute of the celebrations. We would also like to pay tribute to our fourth class and some of third class who were a wonderful choir for the occasion. Our sincere gratitude yet again to our school chaplin, Fr Pat who visited the school on many occasions before the ceremony to work with second class and support Miss Bennett. Finally thank you to the teachers who helped with the music Mrs Kelly, Mrs Ryan, Miss McGrath and Mrs Carroll.
Congratulations to all our pupils who were winners in this year’s Credit Union Art Competition. The announcement was made to great delight! In the seven years and under category Roxanna Nemeth came first at local level and was first in the Chapter of Credit Unions to which Roscrea is affiliated. Ella Keeshan was second and Shane Byrne Hickey was third. In the eight to ten years category Sharon Shanahan won first prize and Tatjana Tukmaniova was third at local level. Finally in the eleven to thirteen years category we had another first, Jimmy McCarthy (5th) was the winner and his classmate Martin Pratt was third. Congratulations to all the artists and their teachers, Miss Bennett, Miss Kearns and Miss Slattery who gave the children great encouragement.
We had a very successful information meeting for parents on the topic of cyber bullying this week. Dr. Sarah Ann Buckley, a lecturer from the National University of Ireland Galway gave the talk. Parents found it very informative and had a positive response. Thank you to all who attended, cyber bullying is very topical at the moment for teachers and pupils alike and we are glad to be at the forefront of keeping up to date with any new developments.
In further artistic news, we were successful in our application to have an artist in residence in our school. Caoimhe Arrigan will be the visual artist who will work with us to continue the celebrations marking the 50th anniversary of our current school building. We are delighted to welcome Caoimhe to the school and we are confident the experience will be a positive and thoroughly enjoyable one for her and the children.
Our girls under thirteen soccer team reached the county final of the FAI Soccer Tournament in Two Mile Borris recently. This was a huge achievement, the final was hotly contested and the team narrowly missed out on victory in extra time. Thank you to Miss O’Rourke who trained them and returned to support them, along with Mr Shelley on the day. Aoife Tynan, Margaret Harty, Aisling Devitt, Kaitlin Dunne, Leah Brooks, Chloe Landy, Linda Harty and Gabrielle Harty all gave a fine account of themselves and did our school proud, well done girls!
