Set Dance Teacher Retires - On Thursday, 14th April last a most enjoyable, if somewhat emotional gathering took place in the Community Hall, Clonoulty. The purpose of this get together was to mark Margaret Slattery’s retirement as a set dance teacher.

In September 1998 Margaret conducted her first set dance class in Clonoulty and since then no measure could be put on the enjoyment the classes brought to those in attendance every Thursday night. Margaret’s good humour was infectious and as the late Connie Ryan would say ‘the craic was mighty’ at those classes.

Margaret was a gifted set dance teacher with exceptional talent. For all of those thirteen years, at absolutely no monetary gain for herself, Margaret shared this talent with her class. She understood that not everyone attending could realistically aspire to reaching her standard of set dancing, but this did not diminish her enthusiasm in any way. Her dedication and commitment to each class were of paramount importance to her, but above all her patience knew no bounds. Night after night she continued to nurture the one who found it difficult to be in the right place at the right time and never once allowed them to feel inadequate or challenged in any way.

A huge crowd, including some very welcome faces from the past turned up on the night of Margaret’s retirement to wish her well. Many set dancers from Cashel, Thurles, Tipperary and Cahir, whom Margaret would have known on a personal level, as well as from the set dance scene, also came along to give her a rousing send off.

Clonoulty Community Hall will be a quieter place on Thursday nights and for those who attended the classes, Thursday nights will never be the same again. Margaret is wished many, many years of health and happiness in her retirement. She deeply appreciates the good wishes extended to her on the night and is most grateful for the beautiful gifts presented to her to mark her retirement. Margaret is the driving force and the ‘Real Boss’ behind the organising of the annual Connie Ryan Gathering which takes place this year in Holycross form the 10th to 12th June.
