As President and P.RO. of Durlas Eile Eliogarty Memorial committee i would like to thank and to wish all the people who supported our committee, attended all our ceremonies over the last twelve months good health and happiness in the future.

It Has been a very good year for the memorial committee. Many more people have visited St Mary’s Garden of Remembrance this year from all over Ireland and from overseas.

The promotion of St Mary’s Garden of Remembrance, the only one of it’s kind in Ireland and, we believe, the only one of it’s kind in the world is very important. We have her ein Thurles what no other town or city have - a Garden of Remembrance where people from all over the globe come to visit and pay their respects to all our local, national .and International heros who have served at home and over seas in the service of peace or who served with many foreign army’s in wars all over the world back over the years.

We have a very special Memorial Garden, one that our committee are very proud of. But, I must say that St Mary’s does not get proper recognition from local tourism in North Tipperary and we get very little promotion from some of our local councillors. We get letters, emails and text messages from all over the globe wishing us well in what we do, and have done, in St Mary’s going back over the last fifteen years. We hope that all committees, councillors and any committee out there in our County involved in promoting tourism put a bit more drive and effort to promote the Thurles area.

All we ever hear about is what is on show in the north of the county. We have beauty, historical sites, history, good accommodation and a Flead Agus Failte to all who visit Thurles. The more tourist’s that come to our town the more money is spent the more money that is spent the more people will be employed. We in the Memorial Committee have always promoted Thurles and the surrounding area to our very best ability. Our reports in the Tipperary Star and the internet when we attend ceremonies at home and overseas are well read - word of mouth goes a long way too.

When we have ceremonies in St Mary’s with visiting Ambassadors, V.I.P ‘S etc. we always invite representatives from all committees to come and meet with them but sadly that is not the case in reverse. A special tourism drive meeting was held lately and not one of our committee was invited to attend. This was brought to my attention while I was writing this report - excluded once again to parttake in having a say in how we can improve and encourage more tourist to our town.

At the end of the day I must say we would not have a Memorial Garden of the highest standard but for our committee and all the people who give us financial support to help us erect memorials. The maintenance of the Memorial Garden includes the area approaching the main gate up to the church on the left hand side and also includes all graves in this area. Our church gate collection this year was 1,000 Euro; Joint flag day with I.U.N.V.A Post no 18 , 500 Euro. We thank all the people who contributed, our main sponsors for this years’ ceremony on November 10th; North Tipperary United Nations Veterans Associations Post no 18; Thurles Town Council; Mr Martin Semple Denver Colorado; Mr Domnic Moore; Mr P.J Ryan Construction, Drish Thurles; Thurles Credit Union; Cobh Branch O.N.E. Co Cork; Pierce McCann branch O.N.E Templemore; Mr Michael and Abbey Bowe, Bowe Travel; Tom and Mary Murphy, Dublin Road; Lower Ormond branch O.N.E Nenagh; Ryan Brother’s Mill Road; Councillor Michael Grogan, Mayor of Thurles.
