Local Fine Gael TD Noel Coonan has welcomed Justice Minister Alan Shatter’s announcement of a substantial additional investment in the Garda fleet. Deputy Coonan said funding of €3 million is being made available for Garda transport funding with 170 new vehicles being purchased.

Deputy Coonan has been strongly lobbying his Fine Gael colleague for additional vehicles for rural Garda stations.

“Minister Alan Shatter has announced that €3million will be spent on upgrading the fleet and it is good news that funding is coming back on track for the force despite our restricted budgetary situation,” said Deputy Coonan.

“I will again lobby Minister Shatter and the Garda Commissioner seeking Garda vehicles for Tipperary Garda stations. The Garda Commissioner will be responsible for the actual provision of the new vehicles and the Garda authorities are making arrangements to have them delivered and commissioned in December and January.”

“I am hopeful that we in Tipperary can benefit from this substantial investment in Garda transport. Fine Gael in Government is conscious of the need to support An Garda Síochána in the vital work that they do and this funding will further enable An Garda Síochána to provide an effective and efficient policing service, especially in rural Ireland,” concluded Deputy Coonan.
