Roscrea was numbed this week following a tragic accident that claimed the life of a local man.

The man, who was 70, has been named locally as Dermot Maher of New Road, Roscrea.

It is understood he was helping his son to cut a tree on his land at New Road on Monday, February 9, when the tree fell and landed on him, causing head injuries.

The fire brigade was called to the scene and Mr Maher was airlifted to Tallaght Hospital in Dublin where he died on February 10. as a result of his injuries

One local described Mr Maher as a “private person”, but said that he would have been well-known locally as his extended family are involved in the haulage business and equestrian sports.

Mr Maher is survived by his wife, Elizabeth, his son and a daughter. Funeral arrangements later.
