The cathaoirleach of the Nenagh Municipal District Council, Cllr Fiona Bonfield, has put forward a motion asking the Tipperary County Council to support next year’s marriage equality referendum. The motion will be discussed at next Monday’s meeting.
“This issue was one of the Labour Party’s main priorities when entering government. As part of the programme for government this was non-negotiable.
“I believe that this is not just a national issue but also a local one. This is a once in a generation referendum and a Yes vote would make Ireland a more socially inclusive country. Being deprived from marrying someone you love due to the gender of that person can no longer be the case” said the Labour councillor.
The Newport native said: “I would encourage people within Tipperary to ask other councillors to support this motion next week. It is extremely important that we in Tipperary support this referendum. Early in the new year the local Labour Party branch will launch a Yes campaign in Tipperary and I also ask that you get involved in this”.
