On Friday, August 30th, Moycarkey-Borris made their own contribution to the year of the Gathering in aid of a worthy cause, and what a night!!
Hundreds of people packed into Younge’s, the Ragg to celebrate local couple, Paddy and Josie Cooney’s involvement in their local Community. Their son Michael did a great job as MC, keeping the night running seamlessly and calling sets. The function room was decorated in parish colours, while a projector of old photos circulated on a screen throughout the night. The photos caused an occasional eruption of laughter from the crowd when fashion disasters and bad hair were on show. They also displayed images of members of the club and parish who were unfortunately now deceased.
Mighty music was provided by Cork duo Ger Murphy and Ken Cotter and the dance floor was literally hopping all night with sets, waltzes, quicksteps and two-hand dances. When the ‘Cashel Set’ was called, the floor filled immediately. Past members of Paddy and Josie’s dancing classes tested their fitness levels as many of them hadn’t danced in years.
Congratulations were in order for Martin Cooney and his wife Mary who celebrated their Wedding Anniversary on the night and they took to the floor to waltz amid much applause. Also, a special mention to those who took to the stage to sing, play music and perform a recitation. The ‘Gathering’ not only provided a great nights’ entertainment but also allowed a catch up with friends, family and neighbours.
At the end of the night, event organiser, Moira Skehan explained how the idea for the event was first established and thanked everyone for making the night such a success.
All profits on the night were presented to the Tipperary Branch of the Parkinson’s Association. Branch Secretary Mary Carey and Treasurer John Carey were in attendance on the night to accept the proceeds. At the time of print, the amount raised was almost €1500, although donations are still coming in!!
The ‘Gathering Event’ was a huge success, much greater than could ever have been anticipated. It was a celebration in honour of Paddy and Josie, a parish get-together, while also raising much-needed funds for a deserving organisation. A special note of appreciation to Donal Younge and staff in the Ragg, family, friends, neighbours, singers, dancers and those who travelled a distance to make it on the night. So, hands up who wants to organise next years one! To make a donation to the Parkinson’s Association of Ireland or for more information, contact Mary Carey (086) 3916726 or www.parkinsons.ie.
