Cashel Gardaí are searching for three youths who broke into the grounds of the girls primary school and used a digger to destroy a new school extension, causing thousands of euro worth of damage.

The three males - wearing dark clothes and hoodies - climbed over fencing at the back of St John the Baptists girls school on the Old Road in the early hours of Thursday morning (July 24/25) and commandeered a digger which had been on the school grounds. The three youths started the digger and specifically targeted a new school extension just recently built. A spokesman for Cashel Garda station said the gang drove the arm of the digger down through the roof of the structure. “We believe the structure is now unsafe, and will have to be taken down,” said the spokesman.

The incident - lasting just six minutes - was captured on CCTV between 3.30am and 4.30am. The vandals can be seen taking pictures of the damage on their mobile phones. Gardaí are monitoring Youtube.com and other websites to see if footage is uploaded by the gang online. They then moved down the street and set fire to a car on the Old Road at about 4.30am. The Fire Brigade had to be called to the scene.

Witnesses are asked to call Cashel Garda Station at 062 75840.
