John G. O’Dwyer, pictured above, has for almost 25 years, led walking groups upwards of 500 times through the mountains and moorlands of Tipperary and Waterford and has penned many descriptions of these outings in the Irish Times.

He has now put this huge experience to use in his new guide book to walking in Tipperary and Waterford, which is being published by the Collins Press.

The book is a comprehensive guide to the best, most captivating trails in these counties and features walks to suit all tastes, from the rugged Comeragh coums to the peaks of the Galtees, from myth-laden Slievenamon, the Devil’s Bit and Tountinna to field systems and ancient pathways in Upperchurch and Kilcommon. Each walk description has directions, the degree of difficulty, estimated time and maps.

But in many ways this is more than just a walking guide. According to the author each route has been chosen because it has a unique story to tell about a landscape that is littered with historic artifacts. “An ancient booley on a hillside shows how the uplands have contributed to human survival, a working farmstead demonstrates the continuation of this, a ruined cottage confirms a battle lost” says John O’Dwyer. The guidebook, which will be in all good books shops in April describes walks not just for committed hillwalkers and casual ramblers but also contains much of interest for environmentalists, historians and all who wish to better understand the age-old and complex interaction between humans and hills.

A walking guide to Tipperary and Waterford will be launched by Con Ryan (Rural Recreation Officer for County Tipperary), with the keynote address being delivered by John Bryan President of the IFA, at 8pm on Wednesday, April 4, in Kinane’s of Upperchurch Village, Co Tipperary. Entertainment will be provided by Constance Catherine Quinlan and the award winning Upperchurch Balled Group. Further information at www.collinspress.ie.
