Nenagh women Mary Shiels and Ciara Kennedy wil join approximately 200 Irish volunteers at this year’s Special Olympics World Games in Los Angeles in July.

Both have been long time volunteers with Special Olympics at local, regional and national level and have been involved with three previous World Games.

“We are delighted to be included in the Irish volunteers chosen to travel to Los Angeles. Ireland is the only country to have an organised team of volunteers travelling,” they said.

A total of 88 Irish athletes will take part in the Games, including Rachel Ryan from Templemore, an athlete with Ormond Special Olympics Club. Rachel has successfully taken part in previous local, regional, Ireland, European and World Games.

The volunteers are required to raise €4,750 each, which goes towards the cost of the project, with a percentage going to Special Olympics to sustain the ongoing programme.

They have received great support from local businesses in Nenagh, Templemore and from individuals but still have a bit to go.

They are having a coffee morning / raffle in the Abbey Court Hotel on Friday, May 15, from 10am to 12.30pm and would We appreciate your support. Mary and Ciara can be contacted on 087-2708904 or 087-2801593.
