Cllr McGrath’s Land Plea a ‘Mad Idea’

A call by Cllr Hughie McGrath to have North Tipperary County Council release land around the Civic Offices for public use was described as “mad” by Nenagh area council manager Marcus O’Connor.

The Independent councillor made his appeal at the January meeting of the area council and was supported by Sinn Fein’s Cllr Seamus Morris.

“If Nenagh Town Council had the land I believe we would come up with an idea for it,” said Cllr McGrath, who is also a member of Nenagh Town Council.

He said that the county council was “only caretakers. The land belongs to the public. The people own it.”

However, Mr O’Connor replied: “it’s a mad idea. The land is owned by the county council, paid for by council money. You couldn’t possibly give it away for free.”
