Portroe native Alan Kelly has thrown his hat in the ring for the deputy leadership of the Labour Party.
The Minister for Transport made the announcement at a media briefing in Leinster House this morning. He told reporters he had a deep knowledge of the Labour Party, having been a member of the party all his life.
His candidacy was proposed by Willie Penrose TD and seconded by Robert Dowds. Minister Kelly was accompanied by a number of other TDs and Senators, including Ann Phelan, who yesterday proposed Minister for Social Protection Joan Burton for the leadership.
Minister Kelly has also said he had huge respect for all the Leadership candidates, including Joan Burton who he said would make a fantastic leader.
Nominations for the leadership and deputy leadership of the party remain open until Tuesday.
