Barber Willie Smyth, Connaught Street, Birr, is pictured on pg 7, with his wife Frances and Brian Redmond AIPPA, Roscrea. Willie was the winner of the Redmonds of Roscrea prize of a €500 portrait. He visited the Redmonds pop up Gallery during Birr Vintage Week & Arts Festival and entered the draw. It is 100 years since Willie’s father, John, opened a Barber shop in Connaught St, Birr and Willie started working there at the tender age of 11. He worked for an impressive 74 years before retiring in 2010. He and his wife, Frances, still live on the premises, in the original house which dates back 230 years. Tradition plays a strong role in the Smyth family with Willie and Frances’ son, John, now running the family business and their daughter, Imelda, running her own hairdressing business a few doors away! Willie plans to use his prize to get a Smyth Family portrait made and who better to do this than Redmonds of Roscrea, also a family business that believes strongly in tradition.
