Tipp train commuters to benefit from new app

The Minister of State for Public and Commuter Transport, Alan Kelly, has launched Iarnród Éireann Irish Rail’s new official app. The app is free to download and available now from the Apple and Android app stores.

The app will provide customers with teal-time train information (real-time) including remaining time to departure and service delays; journey planner (timetables) functionality; nearby station finder based on current location including camera based augmented reality feature; details of intermediate stations and any changes en route; compact display of route alternatives, including door-to-door navigation and walking distances; “avourite” function for destinations and routes including auto-history for past queries; re-entry on last screen when leaving or re-starting the application.

Deputy Kelly says the app will be especially beneficial to Tipperary commuters who can have live and real-time access to information at their local station.

“This will greatly enhance the rail experience for Tipperary commuters. Technology has the ability to greatly improve the transport experience and this app represents an advance of those technologies,” stated Deputy Kelly.

The creation of this new app will further improve the level of information that customers and prospective customers can get on train services in general and on their specific journey. The app has already been downloaded over 12,000 times in its test phase.

Speaking at the launch, Junior Minister Kelly said: “The sharing of data and the availability of realtime information has become crucial to the provision of effective and efficient public transport. It is my belief that this app will vastly improve customer experience for our existing customers and make train travel even more attractive to those who may have previously been non users.”
