The first Pro-Am in almost 20 years will take place at Thurles Golf Club on Friday next when 45 teams of four players, including one professional on each team, will take to the fairways.

The prestigious Pro-Am, which will see a huge influx of visitors to Thurles, is sponsored by Darwin Construction, owned by local businessman Sean Mockler of Two-Mile-Borris, who has been heavily involved in golf over the years and who is a regular supporter of the Irish PGA region.

Sean, himself, has played in quite a number of Pro-Ams and has been to the forefront of Friday’s event at Thurles Golf Club.

Amongst the professionals who will tee-up are European Tour Pro Damien McGrane of Meath, as well as top players of the calibre of PGA Captain, Jimmy Bolger of Kilkenny as well as professionals from all over the Irish Region.

According to the Thurles Pro, Ger Jones, “in my six years in Thurles I have never seen the course in better condition. It is truly magnificent. This is due to the efforts of the staff and course Chairman, Seamus Troy and his many volunteers. With their great efforts it is in a truly excellent condition and Thurles is the premier location for golf in the premier county”.

He stated that Mr. Mockler had been a fantastic help to him in organising this spectactular event and had been a great support in getting the Pro-Am off the ground. “Without his input it would not be happening”.

There are phenomenal prizes on offer, including an 8,000 euro prize fund for the Pro’s as well as magnificent prizes for the top four teams. There will be a prize for the longest drive on the 10th fairway and for nearest the pin on the par-three 14th.

All participants will also receive a welcome pack as they commence their round of golf and there will be snacks for all players on the 10th tee box. Dinner will follow in the Thurles Clubhouse and there will be entertainment in the Clubhouse that night.

Ger has expressed his thanks to the committees of Thurles Golf Club for their support throughout the venture which he says will prove to be a resounding success.
