After the successful Aherlow Walking Festival it was back to regular club walking on Sunday last on a hot and sunny summer day. On such a day where better to be than by the cool and gently flowing waters of the River Suir as it winds its way through the lush green Tipperary countryside.
For his combined B and C outing Eddie McGrath brought 26 people from the starting point at Ballycarron Bridge along the riverbank, through Golden and on to the end of the Boreen Bocht at Camus. The highlight of the walk was undoubtedly a visit to the magnificent ruins of the 12th century Augustinian Abbey at Athassel, one of Ireland’s hidden treasures, but there was much more to see and enjoy along the way.
Other historic sites included Suir Castle at Ballyvada and Ballynahinch Castle and Castleleake closer to Cashel while nature provided a profusion of buttercups in the fields and hawthorn blossom in the hedges as well as glimpses of swans and a swimming mink or otter. All the while the river itself was the walkers’ constant companion on this most enjoyable visit to the waters and the wild. As if the walk was not enough Peig and Eddie provided a bus to take everyone back to Golden and welcomed many to their home for a feast of sandwiches, tea and cakes. Many thanks to both and thanks also to the farmers along the river. Thanks also to Mary O’Dwyer and Breda Ryan for the two most recent Wednesday evening walks. On June 12 the meeting point is the Mountain Road, Cahir at 7pm with Anne O’Donnell and on June 19 Brendan Sheils and Sheila Lenihan start from Anglesboro Village also at 7pm. On Sunday next, June 16, B walkers meet with George Keogh at Clydagh Bridge at 10am to climb Cush and Galtybeag while the C group will meet in Clogheen Square at 11am for a visit to The Vee with Vinnie Normoyle.
*Meanwhile, why not come along and enjoy a pleasant walk next Friday evening on the Tipperary Heritage Way? Walkers will meet at O’Briens Holiday Lodge on the Dundrum Road, Cashel from 5.30pm and the bus will leave for Golden at 6pm. The event is suitable for all the family and is free of charge.
