The Central Statistics Office has released the latest publication in its series of Census 2011 results, showing that there were a total of 58,275 households occupied by residents in Tipperary at the time of the 2011 census, 25,611 in North Tipperary and 32,664 in South Tipperary.

The home ownership rate in the county in 2011 was 75.3% in North Tipperary and 72.3% in South Tipperary with a total of 14,531 households in the county living in rented accommodation.

The number of dwellings that were owned through an existing mortgage or loan stood at 19,841. In total 1,889 households were headed by a person who was either unemployed or looking for work.

The increase in apartments as an accommodation type continued in 2011 with

1,953 occupied apartments in Tipperary in 2011.

Oil was the most popular type of central heating fuel used in the county, heating 67.7% of all homes in North Tipperary and 61.1% in South Tipperary.

A total of 29,773 homes in County Tipperary were connected to public sewerage schemes in 2011, while 24,517 of households used an individual septic tank.

The average local authority rent in North Tipperary increased from €44.19 in 2006 to €49.59 in 2011, and from €46.04 in 2006 to €50.26 in 2011 in South Tipperary.

The number of vacant dwellings in the county totalled 9,344 in April 2011.

Of these 7.148 were vacant houses, 1,078 were vacant apartments and 1,116 were holiday homes.
