Members of Thurles Town Council are this week up in arms over a decision by a consultant engineer to place a 3 tonne weight restriction on Archerstown Bridge, which has been described as extremely precarious and in urgent need of attention.

The bridge, situated approximately three miles from the town centre on the Littleton Road, needs significant repair work to the arch barrels underneath, the wall and the general structure. And, in order to preserve and maintain the bridge in the short term it will be necessary to stop all heavy traffic from using it with a 3 tonne restriction having been placed on it. This means that most lorries and trucks will be unable to use the road and will have to find alternative routes to go about their business. Farmers too will have to be wary about the weight of their loads and the council has announced that CCTV will be used to ensure adherence to the restictions.
