On Wednesday 9th October the children of Tipperary were treated to a very special visit by Irish author Marita Conlon-McKenna.
Marita has long been on the reading list in primary schools and her Children of the Famine Trilogy is as popular now as when first published.
On the day 180 children heard Marita speak about how she comes up with ideas for her books. She always has a book in her head, and even wrote the outline for a new book on her train journey to Thurles!
As Marita’s books are set in the past, she puts a lot of research into them to get the details right, even down to popular first names of the period.
After her presentation there were lots of questions for Marita, in particular, was she going to write a follow-up to the Children of the Famine trilogy.
Marita is thinking of writing a book about one of the characters who moves to the Wild West – so keep on eye out for that!
Marita then took one hour to meet every child there and to sign books and bookmarks for everyone. Breda, children’s librarian, remarked that Marita is “a natural born story teller.” She certainly had the attention of every child and adult at the event.
Thanks to the pupils and teachers from Scoil Ailbhe, Templederry NS, Gortnahoe NS and Killenaule NS who were a brilliant audience. Thanks also to North Tipperary Arts Office for making this event possible.
