Tipperary TD Noel Coonan has welcomed the announcement of €68m for the payment of a minor works grant for the current school year 2013/14 and the introduction of a summer works scheme for improvement works in 2014.

The Fine Gael TD said this marks the return of the summer works scheme with €40m allocated for primary and post-primary schools.

Meanwhile, over €28m is being made available to provide a once-off minor works grant to primary schools.

“The minor works grant will be paid to primary schools in the coming weeks that will enable schools to undertake small scale repair works. This will come as welcome news to Tipperary school communities and will enhance their learning environment and infrastructure,” said Deputy Coonan.

“This Government acknowledges the importance of continued investment in our education section in Tipperary and nationwide. We understand the need for building works, many of which are carried out during the Summer for minimum disruption to school life.

“The schemes will also create jobs in the locality and improve economic activity and this is another major benefit of the announcement,” said Deputy Coonan.

A Freephone service will be put in place to assist schools with any queries on the Scheme including completion of the application form. This service will be available daily between 10am and 1pm and 2pm and 4.30pm until December 10. The Freephone number is 1800-200955.
