Council eventually reaches compromise
Thurles Town Council has agreed to introduce three hours of free parking to all car parks in the Cathedral Town on Saturday’s in a bid to boost business.
Parking will now be free from 9:00am - 12 noon in all car parks following a lengthy discussion at the monthly meeting this week. Cllrs Jim Ryan and Michael Cleary both had motions calling for two hours of free parking, but amid much toing and froing, Cllr Gerard Fogarty and Town Manager Matt Shortt eventually brokered a compromise deal which was accepted.
Cllr Jim Ryan had a similar motion on the clar 6 months ago but it was defeated with Cllr Cleary - the then Mayor -casting his vote against the move, stating that costings had not been done on it. He was happier this time round that costings had been done.
Cllr David Doran had suggested that parking be free all day on Saturday’s, but this was a move too far and would be too much of a loss maker.
