The Tidy Town Committee in Killea were overjoyed to hear, last Tuesday, that the small village had won the ‘Best Endeavour Award’ in Tipperary, in the National Tidy Town’s Competition. This means they had the biggest increase in points in the county.

Killea is only in the competition for the past three years and are really only starting to design and implement an impressive Landscape Plan for the village.

Chair of The Tidy Town’s Committee, Agnes Coonan, thanked her fellow Committee members Laurie Kavanagh and Samantha McElligot for their help and said the Committee wanted to sincerely thank all the volunteers who helped them with the recent painting of the walls in the village and other jobs that needed attention, before the landscaping plan is finalised. She also thanked the Killea Cultural Group for the very hard work they have done to help secure further funding, from North Tipperary LEADER Partnership, which has allowed them to hire Noranne Scott, Landscape Architect, to work with the Community. Her contracts have now been issued.

Chair of the Killea Cultural Group, Denise Meagher, congratulated the Committee and said it was a sign of what was to come in Killea. ‘As a Development Group we are still only gaining momentum’ she said, ‘and this result for the Tidy Towns Committee, is proof of what can be achieved when a community works together to enhance and build their profile. The next few years will be very exciting for Killea, as the various plans we have come together’.

Commenting on the award, local TD Noel Coonan said: “Killea is a rapidly developing and thriving village with a huge community spirit. This is avidly displayed in Killea Tidy Town’s Committee achieving the Endeavour Award in last week’s Tidy Towns Competition. The Tidy Town Committee in Killea have achieved a lot in a short space of time and are to be commended for their efforts. The only way is up for this unique and picturesque village and I am available to do all I can to help the area blossom,” concluded Noel.
