SOUTH Tipperary County Council has agreed to write a letter to central government requesting that the issue of cutting commercial rates be re-considered so small struggling businesses can survive.
The move came after a motion from Cllr Tom Wood: “In an effort to stimulate more activity in the Retail/Commercial Sector, this Council afford new start ups a rates free 1st year and a 25 per cent reduction in year two, with a 20 per cent reduction for all other existing rate payers in 2012.”
The Council does not have the power to put this request into force, and it would need to be sanctioned by central government, heard the Council.
