OVER E5,000 worth of cigarettes were taken in a brazen daylight raid on Easons in Thurles recently. Gardai are following a definite line of inquiry, following the dramatic seizure of thousands of euro worth of cigarettes from the Dunnes Stores Thurles Shopping Centre.

On Thursday, February 24th, raiders entered a storeroom used by Easons in the Shopping Centre. The thieves placed a “substantial” quantity - understood to be in the region of E5,000 - of various brands of cigarettes into a shopping trolley before brazenly making their way out of the Shopping Mall in full view of the public. “They left up the middle of the Shopping Mall and out the front door,” said Det Sergeant James White of Thurles Garda Station. The theft took place between 1.50pm and 2pm.

It’s understood one of the men waited in the shop, and then phoned his accomplice. CCTV evidence shows two men, aged between 40 and 50, making off with the haul. The trolley was later recovered near the roundabout in front of the Shopping Centre.

Gardai are anxious for more information relating to the getaway vehicle in which the pair made off. It’s understood the cigarettes were transferred from the trolley to the vehicle, somewhere adjacent to the roundabout in front of the Shopping Centre. Witnesses should call 0504 25100.
