Seeking McBrides

Dear Editor,

I’ve been trying to trace my grandmother’s roots and after spending hours of going though different websites and paying websites I am drawing a blank right from the beginning.

She rarely spoke about her life in Ireland and this information has been fitted together over the last 30 yrs.

She was born Molly Theresa McBride on the 5th October 1920 (the year may be out) in Tipperary and her father worked in a newsagents on Cashel Road, her father was William McBride and she was 1 of 9, the name of her brothers Gerald, Paddy/Patrick, Joe/Joseph, Bill/William, there were also twins one of whom was called Elian or Arleen, but that’s all the names we have or anyone can remember.

She was sent to a convent school and it is believed that she ran away.

She was either sent to or she ran away to London (England) when she was 17 (approx.) where her brother (Joe/Joseph) was a chef and at the outbreak of war her brother gave her some money and sent her back home to Ireland BUT she never went back nor to our knowledge did she ever get in touch with her family back in Ireland after leaving London. She joined the land army and got posted to Herefordshire and worked there; it is where she met my grandfather and set up a family, 2 daughters and a son (my father), she spoke very little about her family back home in Ireland and there is a real possibility that her family thought she may have been a fatality of WW2.

Molly died in 1982, with so many questions unanswered.

The photo shows Molly at 25 (approx.) some 8 years after leaving Ireland.

I’m hoping that someone might have some information in tracing my great aunties and uncles but I keep coming up with nothing.

If anyone has any information what so ever please contact me, Kevin Duggan, at lostmollymcbride@gmail.com
