Calling Freshfordians of 1961-62 Class

Dear Editor,

Dear Editor,

We would be very grateful if we could use the columns of your newspaper to bring the attention of your readers to our efforts to stage a 50th class reunion at Freshford, Co Kilkenny and request their assistance in trying to locate some of our former classmates.

A small group of former classmates at St Joseph’s College, Freshford, Co Kilkenny are trying to organise a 50th re-union and get together at the former college next Spring. The college at Freshford was a juniorate seminary of the Mill Hill Fathers up until 1982. Students were predominantly from either Kerry, Mayo, Tipperary, Dublin or Donegal and the vast majority have not been in touch with each other since they finished secondary at Freshford in 1966. A very small number went on to study for the priesthood, firstly at the Mill Hill mother house in Ireland at Dartry in Dublin before finally going to Mill Hill in London. The former college at Freshford is now known as Uppercourt Manor Stud and is being lovingly restored to its former splendour by its present owner Mr Paul O’Byrne. The Manor House has an 800 year old history dating back to when it was the former Episcopal summer palace for the Bishops of Ossory.

Because the college closed in 1982, it appears the records of the students register seem to have been mislaid and thus our desire to contact through the columns of this newspaper our missing colleagues and to notify them of our intended re-union plans for next spring. Our number was small, 23 in all and we have re-established contact with 12 as follows: Willie (Liam) O’Neill, Paddy Furlong, Pat Kearney, Leo Brennan, Pat Molloy (Rev), Sean Fieritear, Michael Favier, Tom Hogan, Michael O’Gorman, Denis Ryan and Gerald Needham (Rev) and Donie Butler. Sadly it appears John Gillespie passed away a few years ago. Our missing colleagues are: Kieran Weymss, Kilkenny, John Carroll, Wicklow/Dublin, Peadar O’Cearna, Kerry, Danny O’Neill, Westmeath, Davy Ryan, Tipperary, K Rogan, Tommy Kennelly, Dublin, Eddie Keogh, Tipperary and Anthony/Tony Breslin, Donegal.

May we sincerely thank you and your readers in anticipation.

Yours faithfully,

Willie O’Neill,

Paddy Furlong,

Donie Butler
