Tipperary's loud noise was just thunder and not an alien invasion or low-flying jet

A loud noise over Nenagh caused a lot of interest around the town and surrounding areas.

The noise, which was heard around shortly after 10pm and lasted a number of a number of seconds, generated a lot of chatter on Facebook, with many thinking it may have been caused by a low-flying jet either leaving or landing into Shannon Airport.

However a spokesperson for the Irish Aviation Authority told the Tipperary Star that without having an aircraft number or display sign they could not say if it was an aircraft.

But the Tipperray Star can reveal that the most likely cause was just the Irish weather.

With the cold weather followed by a rise in temperatures, it seems likely that conditions gave rise to a one-off loud peal of thunder.

And a Met Eireann spokesperson confirmed that there was thunder and lightening activity in the area last night.

So, people can now sleep eay in their beds.

They were not being buzzed by low-flying planes and there was no alien invasion.
