An exciting exhibition titled “What’s the Photostory – from Syria to Ireland” was launched on Thursday 2nd November at The Source Arts Centre, Thurles.
“What’s the PhotoStory?” Syria-Tipperary, was the culmination of an exciting project with a group of young people from Syria who are now living in Thurles. Youth Work Ireland Tipperary have been working with the group with support from TUSLA’s PPFS programme (Child and Youth Participation). Each participant created an individual photostory, about their journey and their experiences.
Taking photographs locally and using them as the focal point for their stories, the young people were able to explore events within their lives and bring a picture of their experiences to Thurles for the wider community to see. The stories are heartwarming, touching and jump out of the photos. This has been a powerful experience for everyone involved and the storytellers and their families were heartened to see such a great turnout at The Source on the 2nd November. The exhibition is due to travel to the Aviva Stadium as part of the National Youth Council’s One World Week on the 23rd November and may travel to other towns to be exhibited. All of these young people are being supported in an ongoing way through a youth work process with Youth Work Ireland Tipperary who are committed to continuing a meaningful engagement with them and their families. We hope to develop an educational resource out of this process for wider learning and sharing of experiences within the youth and community sector.
