Newport College passes test as staff and management praised

Newport Community College has passed its whole school assessment with flying colours.

However, the inspectors told managment that they still could do better.

The assessment was carried out last April.

It found that Newport College was a positive and affirming place to learn and work; high expectations were set for punctuality, attainment, attendance and behaviour and students were well supported to achieve to their full potential.

The inspector's report said there was evidence that parents, teachers and students were happy with the school and their involvement with it.

It also found that the quality of teaching and learning was good or better in all the lessons observed, and that the school’s clean and well-maintained surroundings reflect the high expectations set within the school and provide a good quality working and learning environment.

The parents’ association, board of management and in-school management were supportive of each other and worked closely together for the overall good of the school, the inspector found.

However, the inspector reported that there was room to improve on ensuring ongoing work on health and safety was completed in line with relevant guidelines, and thatall whole-school initiatives for teaching and learning should be combined to form one cohesive plan and the use of ICT to enhance students’ learning experiences should be an integral part of this plan.

The inspector also reported that steps needed to be taken to ensure that students were more actively involved in the learning process during lessons, and that senior management needed to oversee and support an improvement in subject planning.

The inspector's report also stated that, through long term planning for school development, the board should aim to ensure applications for accommodation and associated resources were made sufficiently in advance of the needs arising.

It found that staff members provided a good mixture of enthusiasm and reflection and kept the students’ best interests in mind for all decision making.

The vigour and enthusiasm for improvement among senior management was commendable.

In its response, the school said that it was reviewing all policies in relation to health and safety and they were at present with Tipperary Education and Training Board for ratification. It had also introduced a shared learning platform for staff.
