Tipperary's farmers among highest EU benefactors

Tipperary farmers were third on the list of those receiving over €100,000 under the EU Single Farm Payment Scheme.

Nationally, around 130,000 farmers, farm businesses, co-ops, leader partnerships, and local development companies received more than €1.7bn in 2014, including €1.2bn under CAP payments. The other funding relates to monies paid out under development, farm improvement and environmental schemes.

A total of 24 Tipperary farmers were paid over €100,000, with the highest being John Baptist Doyle of Cashel Municipal District, who received€309,611.

However, when fully analysed, the figures show that only 0.2 per cent off all recipients received over €100,000.

The figures are released through the Department of Agriculture at the insistance of the EU who believe the amounts should be made public as this is taxpayers' money.

The Department does not publish the names of those who received under a certain amount, and the information is based on which local municpality area the farmer resides, with exact address withheld.

Responding to the figures, IFA North Tipperary chair Tim Cullinan told the Tipperary Star that Teagasc figures showed that the average annual income for livestock farmers was €10,000 and between 80 and 90 per cent of that came through the EU.

“Without that payment, farmers can't survive,” he said.

Mr Cullinan also pointed out that many farmers had invested in stock and machinery but the EU had gone for a payment system based on hectares.
