After 52 years in business, Thurles cobbler Matty Dowd, who is still going strong, speaks about business, the hard times, and the people he loves to engage with all the time.

Thurles man Matty Dowd has been tending to peoples soles since he left school. A cobbler by trade, he has enjoyed business in the likes of Nenagh, Portlaoise and in more recent times, The Cathedral Town, where he still continues to this day at his home in Bellevue, Moyne Road, after 52 years.

Matty has seen hard times - hasn't ever taken a proper holiday for instance - "If the door is closed, there i no money coming in. That's the way for people who are self employed," he says.

But, he loves the trade and still gets a great kick of handing back a pair of trusted shoes, or a leather handbag, wallet of horses tack to grateful customers.

See this weeks Tipperary Star for a great interview with Matty.
