We’ve mentioned “Black Dog Syndrome” before but with so many beautiful black coated dogs currently sitting in our kennels, I felt it was time to bring it up again!
Black Dog Syndrome is a sad phenomenon by which dogs with mostly black coats are far more likely to be euthanised in pounds and far less likely to be adopted from rescues and shelters. There are many contributing factors to why this is the case – from black dogs simply not photographing as well as their lighter coated kennel-mates to the sad reality that people are often superstitious and fear black dogs assuming they will be unlucky, bad-tempered or cross (especially large black dogs).
This is, of course, all nonsense – black dogs are just as loving as any others – but sadly, that doesn’t change the facts and rescue workers across the world will tell you how their hearts break to see sweet, friendly dogs passed over for a home time and time again simply because of their coat colour.
Below is a selection of the 10 fabulous black dogs currently waiting to find their forever homes in our kennels, some of them have been with us for many months but none of them have given up hope of finding their family. When visitors arrive at the rescue they perk up, get excited, jump, bark and dash about – anything they can think of to draw attention to themselves; they may as well be shouting “Pick me! I’m right here! Pick me!” but even still they are often ignored. Could you break the cycle and open your home to a black dog? Could you be the person to visit our kennels and say “Black dog, I see you and I will love you?” Can you look beyond the colour of their coat to see the colour of their heart? I hope so.
