Roscrea's first Horse and Pony Meeting proves to be a great success

On Sunday last the first horse and pony race meeting ran under the rules of the midlands horse and pony association proved to be a great success. In a splendid location at Brockera, on the lands of Joe Maher a very hard working committee under Shane Lee served up a really great event. All tastes were catered for in that there were numerous side shows for those not into the racing scene.

In all there were eight open races and on the novelty side three donkey races. In the open pony and horse racing over fifty five animals ran in the eight open races and with two other meeting on elsewhere while the quantity of runners was down the quality of racing was top class.

Pat Taaffe, grandson of the legendary Pat Taaffe of the Arkle fame took his first treble of his career in great style. In the three runner Derby his own Mr Bowen was all the rage but did well to see off the persistent challenge of Lady Zena and Joe Conlon. In the open ten runner mile and half horse race on his own Mr James he timed the fractions to perfection to take this race in great style. In the 14.2 pony race over a mile he again showed class to produce Blazing Glory with a late challenge in the shadows of the post to complete the treble. So it was very special day for in year’s talented pilot.

Caoilin Quinn also doubled up when taking both divides of the mile with both Banned Substance and Nothing but Trouble respectively. The latter was eye catching and puts this fellow bang on for the Golden Mile in Dingle in a few weeks.

The finish of the day saw Mickey McGuane and Treasure Beach hang on by the short head in blanket finish in the 15 hands open race over a mile with the fast finishing Mr Bud and Joe Conlon with a neck back in third place was Snowdrop and Pat Taaffe in this seven runner field.

These were some of the highlights but the main one was the effort put in by so many local people and in brilliant sunshine the large crowd enjoyed a great day where local charities were the overall winners.

A special word of thanks again to the landowner Joseph Maher and Shane Lee chairperson of the Roscrea Community Development Council. The sponsors can be proud of what was achieved on the day. Roll on 2017.
