For the GAA fan, one of the highlights of this festival will be the re-enactment of the 1916 All-Ireland between Tullaroan and Boherlahan. 100 years later the two clubs have come together to mark this historic occasion by going back in time to appreciate how the ancient game has changed and evolved over the last century.
The two teams will depart from Lar Na Pairce at 6.30 pm on Friday in period dress accompanied by horse drawn carriages and vintage cars and will make their way through the streets of Thurles to Thurles Sarsfields Outside Field where the match will take place.
At 7.00pm a twenty minute match will take place between the u12 teams of Boherlahan and Tullaroan to demonstrate the modern game and the big match will follow with Archbishop Kieran O Reilly throwing in the ball which was custom at the time - the match will be an exhibition game rather than a competitive one. So whatever your plans for this Friday, don’t miss this historic occasion in the Thurles Sarsfields Outside Field.
The Sean Treacy Pipe Band and Thurles Silver Band will be attendance to add to the occasion and Tipperary Rose of Tralee, Fiona O'Sullivan will also be present. Prior to throw-in, 'Faith of Our Fathers' and the National Anthem will be perfomed with real gusto and each player will receive a personal souvenir of the game as a memento of the historical occasion.
