After nine years in Scotland, the Mid-Tipp Hillwalkers winter meet was in Spain this year.
Based in Monachil close to the very historic city of Granada, walking for all levels was in the Sierra Nevada, the highest mountain range in mainland Spain.
Twenty six members made the trip, and a most enjoyable experience it was. Walks included a circuit of Trevenque, a beautiful walk by the Rio Genil river, and the exciting Monachil river gorge.
On the final day, a group of 16 reached the snow-covered summit of Veleta, which, at 3394m, is the third highest mountain in mainland Spain where, as usual, the Tipperary flag was proudly unfurled (see photo).
Interesting day out
Granada, with its famous Alhambra Palace provided a very interesting day out, and the evening sessions were most enjoyable and great fun.
Overall, a great trip, and we now look forward to the summer trips to the Yorkshire Dales and to Seefeld in Austria.
Meanwhile, this Sunday, it’s back to our own mountains, and the high level walk will leave from Cashel as usual at 11am.
