Editor George Cunningham introduced 31st Volume in Biddy's pub

'Roscrea People' 2015

Roscrea People 2015 was launched in Biddy’s (aka O’Rourke’s Pub, Rosemary Square ) on Friday night.

Editor and publisher George Cunningham introduced the 31st Volume (the 43rd issue) of this community ‘goodnews’ magazine. Since he founded it in 1974, it is awaited eagerly each Christmas and wings its way to all corners of the world. He paid particular tribute to Andrea Patterson and Val Spenser of Walsh Printers who went well beyond the call of duty working all day Saturday and Sunday to ensure that the deadline was met. He thanked his wife Carmel who acted as assistant editor and Michael (Micky) Ryan who did much of the donkey work on the advertising. Pat Bourke and PJ Wright (main photography) came in for special mention as did Brian Redmond who produced once again a memorable cover. At 176 pages in full colour and with over 550 images it is by far the most ambitious Roscrea People to date. Carmel Cunningham thanked the commercial and industrial communities for all their help in these difficult times. She thanked the contributors and congratulated those appearing in print for the first time, not least Mary McNamara who has two poems in the edition. Formally launching Roscrea People 2015, Roscrea Chamber President, Seamus Browne said, ‘The chamber has been in existence in Roscrea for the past 50 years, and encompasses the great voluntary work and commitment, people give on behalf of their town within a lobbying group. Roscrea People observes and records this great work, commitment, and community spirit, capturing it page by page through photos and words.

This is the 43rd edition of this invaluable annual and this year’s book has 176 pages and over 500 colour photos. The Roscrea People is a testament to the inhabitants of the town, its past present and future, and would not come to fruition without the hard work and dedication of George Cunningham.I would like to thank George, for preserving and recording the history of the people of Roscrea for the past 40 years.

Of course behind every good man is an even better woman! And I know George equally attributes the success of each edition to his wife, Carmel. It is my great pleasure and honour as President of Roscrea Chamber of Commerce in its 50th year to launch formally Roscrea People 2015 and to wish it Godspeed as it travels around the world.’

Roscrea People is on sale throughout town for 10 euro.
