HIQA Report on Deerpark Nursing Home, Lattin
DEERPARK Nursing Home near Lattin in west Tipperary has received a generally positive report from the Health and Information Quality Authority (HIQA).
A HIQA inspector visited Deerpark Nursing Home on November 27. The home was recently granted planning permission for major extensions and improvements, following a decision by An Bord Pleanála.
Helen Stone is the person of charge, while Mairead Perry is authorised to act on behalf of the provider.
“Overall the inspection findings were satisfactory,” states the report. “On arrival the centre was organised, residents appeared well, the provider and the person in charge were both on duty and there was an appetising aroma emanating from the main kitchen.
“Residents were relaxed and conversant and eager to tell inspectors that their physical and social needs were well met.
“Both the provider and the person in charge articulated and demonstrated a commitment to regulatory compliance and the provision of safe quality care and services to residents. Improvement was noted since the last inspection and with the exception of challenges posed by the premises actions required from the previous inspection had been fully implemented.”
Ms Stone has been in charge since October 2009. “She is suitably qualified and experienced and based on their observations, documentation reviewed and their interaction with the person in charge, inspectors were satisfied that she had the required knowledge and competencies to allow her to exercise her role and her professional and regulatory responsibilities to a high standard.” The inspector noted that one “significant finding was the failure to facilitate each resident with equitable access to timely and appropriate medical review in line with their needs, a finding that was confirmed by the provider and the person in charge and a situation that was described by them as difficult and challenging.”
The improvements required include: access to timely and appropriate medical review; adequate and robust systems for the review of medications; adherence to manual handling best practice; issues in relation to the premises. These concerns were addressed in detail by Ms Perry. Most of the improvements to the home will take place over the next two years.
