Green Light To Students On Way From Tipp To Abu Dhabi
Minister for Education and Skills, Ruiari Quinn was on hand to launch the 2012/13 F1 in Schools season at the Department of Education. Minster Quinn met with the students of St. Ailbe’s Secondary School in Tipperary who won last year’s competition and are now getting ready to race against the world’s best in Abu Dhabi in October.
St Ailbe’s team, which has a female majority, is a great example of the success initiatives like F1 in Schools are having in encouraging girls to look again at the potential IT offers. By capturing interest at an earlier stage these initiatives are tackling the shortage of woman pursuing careers in IT by encouraging the uptake of IT at 3rd level.
Powered in Ireland by the Irish Computer Society and supported by Discover Science and Engineering, F1 in Schools is a global competition that challenges students to design, build and race model Formula 1 cars powered by compressed air canisters. The F1 in Schools™ Challenge is a response to a recognised skills shortage in computing and engineering. Over the course of the completion students will learn and apply knowledge in a variety of different areas from physics and aerodynamics to marketing and financial strategy.
Launching the event Minister Quinn said, “This programme is a fantastic way for students to put into practise what they have learnt in the classroom. It really is a case of “learning by doing”.
