Galtee Walking Club

The action was around Cahir last Sunday as two of our groups converged atop the Bane Mountain to peak down on the town and its surrounding environs at the beginning of the season of darkness.

Weather conditions were not bad, dry overall but with chilly winds too, and a glorious show of autumn colours all around. First out at 10am was Thos O’Neill with a band of 27 B walkers, who commenced their walk from the Lady Gregory pub. Proceeding up to the barrier in Toureen, they took the path to the right overlooking Pecaun, emerging on the Ballydavid side of the wood.

Then, breaking new ground, they followed a track upwards through the forest to exit at the Coillte forestry clearing. On open mountain now, they headed up Slieveanard and across the mountain to the Bane where they met up with Breda Delahunty’s group of 32 C walkers to form a grand gathering of Galtee walkers! Starting from the same point, the C group had made a shorter ascent of the Bane, cutting straight up through Toureen Woods, across the levels, to reach the open mountain. One of our more challenging C walks, Breda allowed for frequent restorative breaks which enabled the group to go the extra mile and make that spontaneous rendezvous with Thos and his fellow walkers. A hearty lunch, enhanced by wonderful views was enjoyed at the summit before jointly making their return journey down the tracks. We thank Breda and Thos for this lively and sociable outing and welcome three new B walkers from Cork, Clodagh, Teresa and Carmel. A special thanks too to Anthony for his considerate work as sweeper for the C walkers

Next weeks walks: Sunday 4th Nov. Eddie Murphy will lead the B walk starting at Rock an Thorabh car park at the later time of 11am for a forest track walk of 4hrs. The C walk will be led by Ray Coleman, starting at Christ the King statue at 11am. For A walks please contact Tom 0863954924

Please let us have your suggestions for walks before the fixtures meeting on 29th Nov. The club needs your support.
