A huge influx of visitors is expected in Thurles this week-end for the Thurles Sarsfields International Hurling Festival, which will be held over Friday and Saturday.
This year’s festival is a headline event in Tipperary for “The Gathering”, sponsored by IPB Insurance, and, with several Tipperary people involved in the visiting teams, the event will be a “homecoming” for many.
Sixteen hurling teams and eight camogie teams are participating with representation from St Louis and Indianapolis in the United States, London, Northern Ireland, as well as from lesser known hurling counties like Mayo, Leitrim, Kerry, Louth, Donegal and Meath.
The headline hurling competitions are for the Tom Semple cup, presented to Sarfields by the family of the late Tom Semple and the Jackie Carew Cup, presented by the late Jackie Carew to the club some years back. The camogie competition is for the Helen O Mara Cup, dedicated to the memory of the late Helen O Mara who did so much to promote camogie in the town and county.
