Thurles Sarsfields 2-18 J K Brackens 1-15
A serious laceration of the right arm forced Sarsfields and county defender Padraic Maher’s retirement in the second half of this Centenary Agri Mid Tipperary senior hurling losers group tie against J K Brackens at Templetuohy on Saturday last and is a concern for the Tipperary management in advance of next Sunday’s National Hurling League final against Kilkenny.
The Sarsfields man was injured in a clash with J K Brackens’ Lorcan Egan who was red-carded for the foul in a game that was sporting and well-conducted throughout. The Thurles side were leading 2-16 to 0-9 at the time, having had their place in the Mid quarter-final proper secured by the 31st minute when they led 2-12 to 0-3.
Only victory would keep either side in the Mid championship, and holders Sarsfields carried far too much scoring power for their rivals. With the breeze in their favour they dominated the first half completely, going in at the break 1-12 to 0-3. Pa Bourke got the goal in the 24th minute, turning beautifully on a Michael O Brien pass to fire home for a 1-9 to 0-1 lead.
