What a proposal – pop to Kinsale!

I want to take my girlfriend away for short romantic break in Ireland. I am also planning on ‘popping the question’ so am looking for somewhere really nice, cosy and romantic. Where would you recommend?

What an exciting prospect! I can think of no better place than the beautiful historic town of Kinsale nestled between Compass Hill and the mouth of the River Bandon. As a site of one of the first-known Irish settlements, Kinsale is home to many picture perfect proposal spots.

The town itself surrounds a charming harbour that is a constant hub of boating and marina activity. A gentle stroll around the harbour is the best way to start any stay in Kinsale and could even be the very location for getting down on one knee!

If you are feeling nervous before the big proposal nothing clears the head like a good walk. Kinsale has some of the most scenic walking trails that discreetly hug the entire bay. If history is your thing, you should definitely take a wander around Charles Fort and James Fort. Guided tours are available at both locations and while catering to different tastes, most locals will be happy to recommend which one provides the more memorable experience.

One way to really impress your other half is to channel your inner ‘Swayze’ and sign the two of you up for a one-day introduction to pottery at the Kinsale Pottery and Arts Centre. All levels are catered for so, whether you’re a whizz with clay or a complete novice, they will have a class suitable. These classes book up fast so be sure to reserve a place in advance.

It almost goes without saying that some of the best memories you will have of Kinsale will come from the traditional bars and eateries filled with some of the best food, drink and atmosphere that you are likely to find anywhere in the world. Man Friday is the town’s oldest and most famous restaurant making it a must visit during your stay.

Local cuisine is unsurprisingly based on what is caught and landed in the harbour. Whether you prefer your meal smoked or battered the towns many restaurants and chip shops serve some of the best fish dishes in the country. Pub grub is also served around the town and you can find everything from a warm stew to a Sunday roast. If you take the time to look and ask around before deciding you will not be disappointed or hungry!

With so much to do and hopefully a proposal to celebrate, here are the pick of the town’s hotels.
