Swan around Perth to make the most of a family trip Down Under

My daughter has been living in Perth, Australia for the last year so my husband and I are planning to take a two-week holiday to visit her. She has told us so many wonderful things about Perth and as excited as we are to see her, we can’t wait to explore this fantastic place. We want to fit in all the best sights during our stay so we’d love some recommendations on what we should do and see while there.

Nestled on the shores of the Indian Ocean, Perth is a city with beautiful scenery and it has all the essential ingredients for a great holiday. With fantastic weather, some of the country’s best beaches, bustling markets, inner city parks, outdoor dining and amazing marine adventures, this city really won’t disappoint. Situated on the banks of the Swan River, you are sure to fall in love with the picture postcard setting!

Getting around central Perth is relatively easy and won’t cost you a cent. Free bus services running on three routes throughout the city provide a convenient way to travel. Should you want to go further afield, there is a train and bus station right in the centre of the city which provides good value travel tickets to other destinations.

You’ll find most of the city attractions near or on the banks of the Swan River. Some interesting sights include the Swan Bell Tower, The Perth Mint and the wonderful Perth Zoo. You should also make sure to take a stroll through King’s Park which is spread over a thousand acres with a stunning botanic garden. Other must-sees include the Western Australia Museum and the Art Gallery of Western Australia.

Perth enjoys a stunning crystal clear coastline, teeming with brilliant coral, unspoiled reefs, 19th-century shipwrecks, spectacular surf and majestic sea creatures. There are activities galore in this giant aquatic playground; including boating, fishing, diving, snorkeling and surfing.

A visit to the Australian outback is a must! The sunkissed land provides a dramatic backdrop for some unforgettable adventures. With its wide open spaces and roads that seem to extend forever, you are sure to enjoy every minute of this remote wilderness. Here you’ll experience a fascinating mix of nature, indigenous culture, pioneering history and for the more adventurous, four-wheel drive adventures.

For those looking for a little less adventure and for some serious retail therapy, make a beeline for the up-market King Street. Packed with boutiques, art galleries and eateries it really is the place to be seen. If you’re looking for something a little less exclusive, Murray Street and the Hay Street Malls house many high street stores.

After a busy day of adventure or shopping, you can take your pick of the many riverside and beachfront cafes or restaurants, ranging from posh nosh, to cheap and cheerful. Northbridge, Mount Lawley, Leederville and Subiaco have buzzing nightlife, or try Cottesloe or Scarborough for a more laid-back surf vibe.

To finish the night off, jump on a ferry to South Perth to take that world famous snap of Perth’s skyline. At night, it’s especially spectacular when the city’s glittering skyline is reflected in the Swan River.
