Bike your way round romantic Amsterdam

Anne Frank's house
I am planning a surprise holiday for my girlfriend’s birthday. I have organised a weeklong trip to Amsterdam as it has always been a city which we wanted to visit. I want to make it a special and memorable week for both of us. Could you suggest some things for us to see and do and places to stay? Thanks!

What a lovely gift for your girlfriend. I am sure she will be thrilled and totally surprised! A trip abroad is a brilliant way to celebrate and Amsterdam is both beautiful and steeped in history making it one of Europe’s great cities.

The Netherlands’ capital offers such a wide variety of sites and attractions that your trip will be filled with wonderful memories. Dam Square, in the centre of the city, is a beautiful place to begin a day’s sightseeing, take in your surroundings and get your bearings. The Square is home to the Royal Palace, Nieuwe Kerk and the National Monument which commemorates the victims of World War II.

A visit to the Anne Frank Museum is a must for any trip to Amsterdam. Located in the house where Anne Frank wrote her world-famous diary during the occupation of Holland during World War II, a trip to the museum will leave you in awe of the courageous struggle of Anne and her family.

If your girlfriend likes art, Amsterdam is also home to many world-renowned galleries. The Rijksmuseum is home to an extensive collection of paintings, sculptures, archaeological artefacts and much more. Built in 1879, the building in which the museum is located is another reason to visit and makes it a beautiful place to spend an afternoon of your trip. The Van Gogh Museum is another of the city’s most popular museums and contains an extensive collection of the painter’s work.

Upon arriving in Amsterdam, visitors can be overwhelmed at the vast number of bicycles tearing through the city streets. Travelling by bike in this European city can be treacherous and is not for the fainthearted. However if you choose to take the plunge, it is a brilliant way to mingle with the locals and see the city sights. The city’s canals are another unique way to see Amsterdam and numerous tours are available on the water. This is a great way to relax and take in the city’s beautiful architecture.

If you and your girlfriend are beer lovers, The Heineken Brewery in the city centre will give you a great insight into the behind-the-scenes action of one of the world’s most popular brews. There is also a tasting bar for you to experience firsthand the thirst quenching beer produced in the factory.

Tasting local cuisines is one of the best parts of travelling abroad. Loetje on Johannes Vermeerstraat offers traditional cuisine and is a great choice for those looking for an authentic Amsterdam dining experience. Greetje on Peperstraat is another of the city’s great traditional restaurants. For something closer to home, La Luna Steakhouse Grill is a brilliantly atmospheric restaurant and its relaxed mood will give you a different sense of dining in Amsterdam.
