For a special weekend, treat yourself to a nice Bath

I would like to treat my sister to a weekend away for her 30th Birthday. I was thinking of going to Bath. We both enjoy shopping and it would be great to squeeze in some sightseeing too! Can you please recommend some things to do and places to stay?

Bath is a fantastic choice for a relaxing weekend away. With stunning architecture, great shopping and lots of historic sites to visit, you will certainly have an enjoyable weekend full of culture and luxury!

What better way to begin a girls’ weekend than with a spot of shopping? First priority should be the newly refurbished Southgate shopping centre. Located in the heart of the city, Southgate is a modern shopping centre with a twist as it features classic Georgian-style open streets and public areas.

For more independent shops, check out The Artisan Quarter, a creative hub which is full of vintage, craft and antique shops. London Street and Walcot Street hold flea markets every Saturday where you can browse for bargains. For designer goods and high-end boutiques, head to the Milsom Quarter which features department stores including House of Fraser and Rossiters of Bath.

Treat yourself to a day of pampering at one of Bath’s many spas. Situated in the heart of the city, Thermae Bath Spa is a remarkable combination of old and new where historic spa buildings blend with the contemporary design of the New Royal Bath. By day and by night, you can bathe in Britain’s only naturally warm, mineral-rich waters including the indoor Minerva Bath and the open-air rooftop pool which boasts spectacular views over the city of Bath. The Thermae Bath Spa features aroma steam rooms and offers over 40 spa treatments ranging from traditional massages, facials and Hot Stone therapies.

No trip to Bath would be complete without a visit to the famous Roman Baths. The Romans built a magnificent temple and bathing complex that still flows with natural hot water. Roman costumed characters will take you on a tour that includes seeing the water’s source, the Great Bath, the Sacred Spring, the Plunge Pools and Saunas. The extensive ruins and treasures from the spring are still beautifully preserved today.

For a breath of fresh air with beautiful views overlooking Bath, take a walk in the Prior Park Landscape Garden, the 18th century park created by Bath entrepreneur Ralph Allen. The park features the famous Palladian Bridge, one of only four in the world. You can explore the woodland paths or just relax and admire the breathtaking view.

When it comes to sightseeing, Bath offers many tours. To discover the history of Bath as well as some more unusual stories, take the official bus tour. The City Sightseeing Tour allows you to hop on and off at the famous sights and attractions such as the medieval Bath Abbey and the Pulteney Bridge. Alternatively, you can take to the water and enjoy a boat trip on the River Avon.

For dinner, you will find something to suit you whatever your tastes, whether it’s a cosy country pub or an award-winning restaurant. Enjoy a Michelin star meal at the Park restaurant, situated in the very grand Lucknam Hotel - a magnificent mansion set in 500 acres of extensive parkland.

For a simpler affair, the centre of Bath has many great pubs from the trendy to the more traditional. The Chequers is a popular spot among locals; it serves high quality gastropub food in a warm and friendly pub atmosphere. The Marlborough Tavern, The Swan and The Cork are some other brilliant gastropubs in central Bath, ideal places to while away a cosy winter evening. Head to the central Circo Bar and Lounge after dinner to enjoy some cocktails and live music in stylish surroundings.
