Travel: Make a sweet production out of your trip to Bruges

Belfry Tower
I am looking for a great place to go away with my girlfriend for a long weekend. We love to travel and have been to all the usual cities in Europe such as Berlin, Amsterdam and Prague. We are looking for somewhere with great food, culture and scenery. Can you help? Thanks!

The first place that springs to mind is Bruges. This bustling little city located one hour from Brussels garnered a lot of attention after the 2008 box office hit ‘In Bruges’, starring Colin Farrell and Brendan Gleeson. However, there is a lot more to this historic haven than meets the eye, or the silver screen in this case.

Lovers of art are spoiled for choice in Bruges. The Expo Picasso, located in the historic area of Old Saint John’s, is home to more than 120 original works of art by Pablo Picasso. Fans of Salvador Dalí should visit the dedicated exhibition showcasing a fantastic collection of sculptures, drawings and graphic art by the renowned artist.

For something a bit different, and truly unique, be sure to visit the Our Lady of the Pottery Museum. A little off the beaten track, this small museum was originally a hospital and dates back to the 13th century, as do the art, relics and objects that are housed inside it.

In terms of food, you’re in for a big treat when you visit Bruges! Bruges is known as a chocolate hotspot as it is home to over 50 chocolatiers. Choco-Story is the city’s chocolate museum and is well worth a visit. Not only do they offer free samples throughout the tour to keep things interesting, the museum also provides a rich history of chocolate, both in Bruges and around the world.

Another delicacy for which the city prides itself is fries. The Belgian Fries Museum explores the history of the potato, plus the extensive array of sauces and dips that are the perfect accompaniment to this simple dish. After a day of sampling delectable delights, you can wander the cobbled streets and put your newfound knowledge to the test in the numerous chip shops, bars and restaurants.

Bruges really is a city for strollers. While the canals may be reminiscent of Amsterdam, Bruges’s magic lies in its easy-to-manoeuvre streets. The benefit of this is that you can truly take in the beauty of the scenery on foot, and the city is small enough to manage comfortably. Colourful, mismatched medieval buildings line the narrow streets while the centre point of Market Square is home to the stunning Belfry Tower (which you will recognise from the movie) and the picturesque Provincial Court. If you fancy a break from walking, taking in the city by canal boat or horse and carriage at dusk can be quite special, not to mention very romantic.

Considering the specific interests that you and your girlfriend have, you are sure to be impressed by beautiful Bruges. Enjoy!
