There’s a little of the old and the new coming to the Cathedral Town as The Mall Curios reopens it’s doors in Thurles much to the delight of it’s many customers.
The business, which has been a fixture on the Mall, Thurles, for over 20 years selling jewellery and antiques, has been refitted, remodelled and reborn with a stylish new décor. It will open it’s doors on 1st October.
Started as a furniture business by Dick and Frances Donohoe in the mid-eighties, it moved to it’s current location on the Mall, Slievenamon road in the early nineties. Frances developed the business, where she concentrated on high quality jewellery, antiques and occasional furniture. The shop has evolved again with daughters Deirdre and Fiona taking the family business to a new level. In their retirement, Frances and Dick are happy to see them carry on the family business.
Inspired by their mother’s passion for old world charm and style, Deirdre and Fiona now intend to continue the development of the business with an additional focus on vintage costume jewellery as well as remaining loyal to the original atmosphere by stocking a full range of modern and antique items that their mother was renowned for.
Deirdre and Fiona have brought a renewed vision and enthusiasm to the business, combining a desire to create a comfortable welcoming shopping experience, with a passion for sourcing inspiring high-quality gifts and offering value for money to their customers in tough times.
Fiona, who studied art and design and has been working in graphic design, says “We both have a real love of old pieces, and I’ve a special interest in the Art Deco movement. We’re found some beautiful one-off pieces from the turn of the century, and into the Art Deco period, that will make an extra special treat for you, or gift for your loved one.”
As well as the antique jewellery, the shop is stocking a collection of contemporary jewellery in gold, silver and platinum with precious and semi-precious stones from designers such as Knight and Day, Rocks and Martine Wester.
There will also be a wide range of giftware to suit all occasions from Christmas to birthdays, engagements to weddings and christenings to communions. These include antique and modern silverware, a wide variety of homewares such as gallery prints, gilded over-mantle mirrors, photo frames and leather goods such as jewellery boxes and wallets.
Deirdre, Chartered Accountant and business graduate, says they’re very excited about their engagement ring service. “We’re introducing a specialist service where you can custom design your own engagement ring. We will help create your bespoke ring from scratch, finding out exactly what you want, sourcing the right stone to suit your design and commissioning the ring.” Alternatively, you can choose from a wide selection of pre-designed rings in stock.
And the service doesn’t stop there. Deirdre says “We’ll be there to help the bride and groom choose their wedding bands and we also stock a wide selection of bridal jewellery such as pearls and swarovski crystals.”
Deirdre and Fiona are looking forward to sharing their passion for these little treasures and are hoping to instil a love for gifts that are just a little bit different.
The Mall Curios is re-opening on Saturday the 1st of October. It will be open 6 days a week, Monday to Saturday, 9.30am-5.30pm. As a special opening offer there will be 15% off everything in stock for the first week.
