Your house is your castle in magical Brittany

Mont St Michel
My partner and I are going to Brittany in September. We don’t know this region at all and are only going for a week. What are the things to do and see in this part of France? We are thinking of seeing the Mont St Michel - but we would like some help so that we don’t miss out on anything!

Brittany is a beautiful part of France and has so much offer that you and you partner will not be disappointed! The long history and wealth of culture in this region makes it a unique place to visit and an ideal destination for your holiday.

There are countless castles and strongholds in the region which each offer an exceptional insight into the lives of their previous owners and occupants as well as the history of the area. La Hunaudaye Castle is a spectacular showcase of medieval design. Still surrounded by a defensive moat, this castle is a perfect afternoon out and numerous tours are available throughout the day. A night tour is also offered by the castle guides if you are feeling adventurous.

Kerguéhennec Château is another beautiful castle in the region and a magical place to spend a day. The extensive grounds are a peaceful and tranquil place to relax away from the bustle of the regions towns and cities. The castle’s interior has recently been restored to its former splendour and houses a range of contemporary art exhibitions for visitors to enjoy.

Overlooking the sea, Daoulas Abbey in Brest has a long and rich religious history which dates back to the Dark Ages. The ruins of the Romanesque abbey are surrounded by beautiful botanical gardens which are filled with medicinal plants including a variety of herbs, therapeutic and exotic plants. The grounds of the abbey, which feature their own lake, offer spectacular views of the coast and make the abbey a beautiful place to visit during your week.

Mont St. Michel, located on the border between Brittany and Normandy, is a wonderful place to spend a day of your trip. The iconic monastery sits atop a rocky islet which is separated from the mainland by one mile of sand or water depending on the tide. The 900 steps of the Escalier de Dentelle are well worth the climb as visitors are rewarded with spectacular views of the bay from the gallery of the abbey. A number of museums are also located within the walls of the medieval town including a museum documenting the history of the area and a maritime and ecology museum. The mussel and oyster bars along the edge of the bay are a great place to take in the scenery and grab a bite to eat.

Getting out on the water is a unique way to see Brittany and can create a great memory of your stay. Traditional sailing ships can sweep you down the spectacular coast line and you can even help out and try your hand at sailing for the first time if you are feeling courageous.

Le Guehennec in the striking city of Rennes offers traditional French cuisine in quiet, intimate surroundings. All dishes are prepared using seasonal, locally sourced ingredients and will give you a taste of authentic Brittany.

Once home to feared pirates, the atmospheric Saint-Malo is one of the most visited cities in the region. Numerous gourmet seafood restaurants can be found within the historic walled town. Le Chalut on Rue de la Corne de Cerf is one of the city’s best and offers seafood with an unexpected contemporary twist.

The towns and villages in Brittany are dotted with bars and cafés for passers-by to relax and soak up the atmosphere. Le Verre à l’Envers in Vannes is a stylish and atmospheric bar and a great place for a glass of wine after dinner. If you are looking for something a little closer in style to home, St. Patricks Pub in Saint Malo is ideal.
